Japan Quake: What Happened?

FACT SHEET(情報記事）:

The March 11, 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami – Japan:

• -A 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck Friday, March 11, 2011; the epicenter was 130 km east of Sendai. It is the strongest earthquake in recorded history to hit Japan.
• -The earthquake triggered a massive tsunami, which hit the coastline and swept away many structures.
• -The USGS reported many aftershocks. Many were greater than magnitude 6.

日本で起こった地震と津波２０１１年３月１１日：

• ・２０１１年３月１１日の金曜日、日本にマグ二チュード９．０の地震が生じました。震源地は仙台から東部１３０キロ離れた場所で、日本で史上最大の地震とも言われています。
• ・今回の地震は、海岸線地帯に打撃を与え、多くのありとあらゆる建物をも飲み込んでしまう大規模な津波を引き起こしました。
• 米国地質調査所は多くの余震を報告しました。およそ２０以上がマグ二チュード６．０を超えるものでした。

 

Damage to transportation and communication; loss of life:

• -Some airports were damaged by the repeated tsunami waves. Some expressways and railways are also wiped away, in many parts of mainland Japan northeast from Shizuoka, Yokohama, Tokyo and its vicinities.
• – (Sunday, March 20) The official death toll reached 7,600. Nearly 12,000 people were missing and 2,611 injured, according to the National Police Agency Emergency Disaster Headquarters. The number of dead is expected to rise as rescuers reach more hard-hit areas.
• -So far, about 15,000 people have been rescued, the Kyodo News Agency reported Monday, March 14th.

Nuclear worries: (CNN news)

• -The quake and tsunami disabled the coolant systems at Fukushima Daiichi, which is about 260 km (160 miles) north of Tokyo.
• -The situation is not yet resolved; the Japanese government continues to monitor it and to test people for radiation exposure.
• -(Thursday, Mar 17) High levels of radiation have been detected 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, broadcaster NHK reports, citing Japan’s Science Ministry. Exposure to those levels of radiation for six hours would be equivalent to the safe level of what a person can absorb in a year, according to the report.
• -(Friday, Mar 18) The federal government’s recommendation that U.S. citizens stay at least 50 miles away from the plant in Japan remains “prudent and precautionary,” he told reporters at the White House.
• -(Friday, Mar 18) Japan, in contrast to the U.S.’s 50-mile recommendation, has advised people living within a 20-kilometer (12-mile) radius of the plant to evacuate. It also has said that people living 20 to 30 kilometers from the site should remain inside. Japanese authorities also have banned flights over the area.

放射能の懸念（CNNニュース）：

• ・地震の津波により、東京から２６０ｋｍ北方にある福島第一原発の冷却システムが機能停止しました。日本の東京電力によると、被害を受けた原子炉にて炉心融解が 起こる”可能性”があるとのことですが、空気中できわめて危険な放射線レベルは観測されていないとのことです。福島第一原発が3月14日月曜日に原子炉の問題解決のために蒸気を発散させた時、放射線レベルがそれまで観測されていた最大値の2倍に上昇しているのが観測されましたが、原料が消散されたためかその後、劇的に下がりました。
• ・政府は、半径１０ｋｍ以内の住民２０万人以上を避難させ、放射線による被曝状態を検査しています。
• ・事態はまだ解決されておらず、政府は引き続き監視を続けます。
• ・３月１５日午後１時、管直人首相は公式会見にて、壊れた福島第一原子力発電所から放射能漏れの高い危険性があると発表しました。また半径２０ｋｍ以内の全住民に避難勧告を、半径３０ｋｍ以内の住民全員に屋内待機命令を発令しました。

 

Help is coming!

• -Japan has dispatched 100,000 members of its defense forces to the quake-ravaged region, and is extending emergency food, drinks and assistance to affected areas.
• -Sixty-nine governments have offered to help with search and rescue.
• -The Japanese government has received 11 Urban Search and Rescue teams (USAR), including teams from the United States, South Korea, Australia, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, China, Hungary, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
• -US Navy has 8 ships near Japan, 5 en route. These ships, including the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan were assisting the Japanese in rescue and recovery operations. Planes and helicopters will be used for reconnaissance, to carry water and blankets. The USS Blue Ridge will arrive on Thursday with humanitarian aid on board.
• -Many church-based organizations are giving aid now and in the coming days. They hope to dispense blankets, heavy sleeping bags, baby formula, feeding bottles, food and water, in addition to emotional support and counseling, and trauma help especially for children.
• -Many funds are being donated through organizations and churches to assist in relief efforts.
• -(Friday, Mar 18) China and South Korea will send hundreds of thousands of gallons of gasoline, diesel fuel and oil products to Japan to combat fuel shortages that are hindering relief efforts, broadcaster NHK reports.
• -(Friday, Mar 18) The U.S. military is sending a nine-member team specializing in responding to nuclear and biological hazards to Japan to advise the Japanese government, Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said.
• -(Friday, Mar 18) Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has authorized $35 million for humanitarian aid. More could be authorized.

Outlook for the coming days:

• -All tsunami warnings were cancelled March 13, 2011, but more warnings are likely to be issued because of aftershocks.
• -Power is a serious problem. There are scheduled blackouts in many areas to save and share the power supply.
• -Main roads and express ways are still closed to the general public due to damage. Only rescue mission vehicles are allowed to use them.

• ・３月１３日日曜日時点で全ての津波警報は一旦解除されましたが、余震による津波警報がさらに生じる見込みです。
