Joel speaks of destruction. He speaks of waves of locusts coming to destroy the land and its crops. He also speaks of repentance, restoration, and renewal. God punishes but Joel acknowledges that God’s desire is to relent and renew relationship with Jerusalem. With the promise of locusts comes the promise of God pouring out his blessing in profound ways on those who repent. Joel speaks of torn hearts rather than torn clothes as the true sign of repentance. Joel uses the language of Moses’ meeting with God at Sinai in Exodus 34 to capture the heart of God to bless rather than punish. Over two thousand years have passed since the days of Joel. God has not changed. He desires to bless not punish. He longs to have relationship. He seeks pliable repentant hearts. He promises connection with Him that will far exceed anything we might imagine. Love and praise Him who seeks you, wants you, and will bless you.
