Divided loyalty.
The people thought other gods added to the temple would make sure that everything was covered. Just in case the God of Abraham got tired of sending rain, they would worship Baal. Just in case God wasn’t interested in additional children being born, the people worshiped Ashteroth. In our text, God makes it clear that he will not share his name or temple with any other gods. There was to be no divided loyalty. God did not grow weary or lose interest in his people. God wants a relationship with us that is undivided. We may think that God is disinterested in some aspect of our lives or is too busy to attend to our needs. But our false belief about God does not change the nature and character of God. God sought an exclusive relationship with Israel and he continues to seek an exclusive relationship with his people now. Our loyalty is to God. No other gods are needed.
