Bread.
Jesus claims that he can feed people forever. To eat of him is to be sustained. The person who eats his flesh and drinks his blood will never be hungry or thirsty again. We can understand how people might have been repulsed by such words. The people were looking for another Moses. They were looking for someone who could feed them manna just as Moses had done. What the people wanted from Jesus was more than 40 years of food; they wanted the security that comes from never having to work for another meal. Jesus wanted to give them spiritual security, but the people could only think about their physical hunger. What do we expect Jesus to do for us? Do we expect Jesus to make us secure in this life? Do we expect Jesus to make sure that we are comfortable? Jesus offers relationship with him. He offers life. Real life. He isn’t offering a life of ease but a relationship that brings eternal life. He is offering a relationship that fills us in every way so that we are never hungry spiritually. This life fills us with peace when there is disharmony. This life fills us with joy no matter the circumstance. This life gives us confidence and assurance in the face of opposition. This life is all we could ever want or need. This is a life without end. This is the life that really matters.
