Peace.
The disciples are confused. All the talk of betrayal, loss, death, and ultimately that Jesus is going away has left them dazed and uncertain. Jesus tries to console but he knows that his words will not have their full effect until later. Notice 14:27. Jesus gives to them his peace as a gift. His gift is different from what the world gives. In fact, the world is incapable of giving them peace. The world gives us trouble, sorrows, and grief (16:33). What Jesus can give us is quite different from what the world gives us. There is no promise of ease and comfort. There is instead a promise that the world will hate us and despise us because we love Jesus. It is in that hatred that we discover the peace that only Jesus gives. This peace, fostered by the work of the Holy Spirit, allows us to remain confident and courageous even though the world rejects us. Although we may find our emotions raw and on edge because of this world’s hatred, we find closeness with Jesus to be sufficient for our rest. Walk in peace. Do not be afraid. Trust the Father and trust Jesus.
